Two of Argentina's most visually stunning landscapes in one day: the blinding white expanse of Salinas Grandes at 3,450m altitude and the multicoloured cerro of Purmamarca with its famous Hill of Seven Colours. Salinas Grandes is one of the largest salt flats in South America, and standing on its perfectly flat, mirror-white surface — especially after rain, when a thin layer of water turns it into a genuine mirror of the sky — is one of the more disorienting and memorable landscape experiences Argentina offers. Hornocal sits higher and further off the main route than Purmamarca's more famous hill, which keeps it considerably less crowded despite arguably more dramatic colour banding across its ridgelines. Combined with a visit to the historic town of Humahuaca, whose colonial core and 17th-century church add cultural depth to a day otherwise focused on geology and landscape.
